Singing is the key element of the Festival, and each year The Festival Singers is assembled from choral singers across the county, to provide major events in the Festival.
In 2018, The Festival Singers will give a landmark concert in Wimborne Minster on Friday 10 August. Accompanied by The Wessex Festival Orchestra and conducted by the Festival’s Artistic Director, David Fawcett, its programme will reflect this year’s overarching theme, ‘War and Peace’, marking the centenary of the end of the First World War:
Haydn – Missa in tempore belli (Mass in the Time of War)
Vaughan Williams – Six Choral Songs to be Sung in Time of War
Elgar – With Proud Thanksgiving
Parry – Grant us thy peace, Lord
Paul Ayres – ‘Tis not too late to seek a better world
The Festival Singers will also sing two choral services in Wimborne Minster on Sunday 12 August (including music from the Great War era by Parry, Stanford and Charles Wood).
Registered members also gain free access to the Composers Showcase and the Singing Workshop with Sarah Pring, as well as all rehearsals during the four days of the Festival.
Additional preparatory rehearsals are available at no extra cost for those that want help learning the music in advance. These are scheduled in the weeks running up to the Festival – on the evenings of Thurs 7 & 21 June & 5 July in Wareham Methodist Church and Tuesday 17, 24, 31 July & 7 August at Yarrells School, Upton.
It is not too late to join the Festival Singers for 2018, even if you can only attend rehearsals from 9 August onwards. All are welcome.
